A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving following a collision in Ixworth at the weekend. Police were called at just before 8am on Saturday 3 October to reports of a four-vehicle collision on the A143 between Ixworth and Stanton. A black BMW M140i and a grey BMW 635 Coupe were travelling in the same direction. A green Claas forage harvester and a blue New Holland tractor towing a trailer were travelling in the opposite direction. All four vehicles were involved in a road traffic collision. The driver of the BMW 635 Coupe was subsequently trapped within his vehicle. Police, fire and ambulance crews all attended the scene and the BMW 635 driver – a man aged in his 50s - had to be extracted from the car. He was then taken to hospital for treatment having sustained potentially life-changing injuries. The BMW M140 driver failed to stop at the scene and officers immediately undertook enquiries to locate him. A 48-year-old man was subsequently arrested at 2.30pm in Bury St Edmunds on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident. He was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre (PIC) for questioning and was later released under investigation pending further enquiries. The driver of the New Holland tractor – a 24-year-old man – was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving. After being transported to hospital for a check-up he was also taken to Bury St Edmunds PIC for questioning and was released under investigation pending the outcome of blood tests. The road was closed throughout the afternoon to allow for recovery of the BMW 635 and the tractor. Police officers left the scene at 5.30pm and Highways took over the closure into the evening to facilitate cleaning the road surface. Police are appealing for witnesses - including any other motorists driving in the area around the time of the collision with a dashcam fitted in their vehicle, who are asked to review the footage for any material that may be of assistance.
